Women’s day celebration 2014 – Bakhtiarpur, India

The Community Health Center and Out Reach Program of Bakhtiarpur celebrated the International Women’s Day on 14 March. The theme for the celebration was ‘violence against women’, (domestic violence, rape, dowry system, suicide, alcoholism need for education especially girls). Though the Sub Divisional Officer of Barh, Dr. Niles Devre, agreed to be present as chief guest, he could not make it at the last minute.

For a change, five senior most women from the group were selected to light the lamp. The women were delighted with the honour. They shared their experiences of being in the Self Help Groups. The group appreciated the honor given to the senior-most women. Since it’s harvesting time for rural women, 500 women from city panchayat (city local self government) gathered to celebrate.

The women spoke about the need to prevent violence against women. Street play, awareness songs and the speeches of the women and Kishories (teenage girls) were based the on the violence against women.  Inspired and influenced by the program, the women decided to be united to fight for the violence against women in their locality.
