Today marks the 40th anniversary of our SCN presence in Belize. On Saturday, August 28 the SCN’s in Belize celebrated our anniversary at St. Martin’s Church in Belize City. Bishop Christopher Glancy served as the main celebrant at the Liturgy. As the ending part of the homily Sr. Barbara Flores recounted the time in Dangriga when she first met the SCNs and how they inspired her from the very beginning. The Bishop also asked Sr. Maggie Cooper to fill in a little of the what was happening in the SCN Community 40 years ago that made the community ready to accept this new mission. The Liturgy was a joyous celebration. Present at the ceremony were members of other communities of religious in Belize, SCN Associates, colleagues, neighbors and friends, who came from both Belize City and from other parts of Belize. The celebration continued at SCN Center where we all gathered under tents to partake in the feast of good food prepared by Sr. Carlette Gentle. The occasion was truly joyous as we informally shared stories of the blessings of God during these 40 years.
This celebration is the first of three celebrations planned for different places in Belize where we have served in ministry. On October 3 a celebration is planned for Dangriga where our Sisters first served. There Sr. Rhoda Kay Glunk and Jo Ann Paulin, Associate Director, will attend the celebration after facilitating a retreat with our Associates there. The last celebration is scheduled for November 29 and will be held in San Antonio in the Toledo District where our Sisters have served in the past and where Sr. Higinia Bol and Sr. Christine Kunze now serve.
