“We the Peoples of the United Nations” are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the UN in 2020. At the end of World War II, 51 countries came together in San Francisco, USA, to adopt the UN Charter on June 26, 1945. Officially, the UN came into existence on Oct. 24, 1945, and this day is celebrated as UN Day by people everywhere. The UN serves as a global forum where countries come together to discuss issues, problems of war and peace, protect human rights, deliver humanitarian aid, promote sustainable development, and uphold international law. The Member States, 193 of them may be in the limelight at the UN, but the civil society members from around the world are integral to all the deliberations – the NGO networks do provide ideas to shape the policy decisions and resolutions through intense advocacy work. We are also partners, who uphold the values of the UN and implement its policies and programs at the grassroots. Though flawed, the UN is essential for global governance today. We have the power to shape the UN we want, do join the conversation to make your voice heard: https://www.un.org/en/un75
