The SCN Lay Mission volunteers have spent the last six days working with the girls at Asha Kiran in Dharuhera, India. The time has passed quickly as there is always something to do. The girls are such a wonderful and talented group! They are so happy for the love, attention and positive influence provided by the volunteers here. Aside from tutoring the girls in math, science and English, the volunteers have assisted with daily yoga class instruction, creating a Christmas program for the Archbishop’s upcoming visit and also providing counseling on a one-on-one basis for several girls with special needs.

Today the volunteers began their morning by cleaning out the library at Asha Kiran and beginning the process to organize over 30 boxes of donated books and materials to catalog them and make them more accessible. Sisters Lucy, Agnes and Sujata work tirelessly with the girls and have expressed their gratitude for the contributions the volunteer group has made already.

Friday will be a sad time for all, as the girls are already anticipating the end of their time with their new ‘aunties’ and asking when they will return.

Without Asha Kiran many of these girls would be homeless, on the streets or in brothels. Asha Kiran truly is a ‘ray of hope’ in this community and having the opportunity to volunteer here has been a once in a lifetime experience.
