We, Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, rooted in our faith and Jesus’ model of nonviolence in ministry, work to promote a culture of peace through nonviolence in prayer and action.
The most recent gun violence in Parkland, FL, reaffirms that America has a gun violence epidemic and gun violence is a complex issue with many areas of it needing to be addressed. We stand with many who grieve these deaths, pray with these families and work to support policies that reduce death and injury from gun violence.
In solidarity with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, we call on our elected leaders to take up legislation that:
- requires universal background checks and mandatory waiting periods for all gun purchases,
- bans civilian ownership of high capacity weapons and magazines, and
- makes gun trafficking a federal crime.
We commend the many who have worked tirelessly to prevent gun violence and join them in their efforts to advocate for policies that promote human dignity by protecting life.
Sisters of Charity of Nazareth
Western Province and Congregational Leadership
We stand with you in this statement and are proud to live in Nazareth Village begun by Mother Catherine’s sisters. You surely follow in her footsteps.
Thank you.
Our Congregation is surely taking the correct approach. I am glad to be among the people taking such a stand. It is an inspiration to see and to hear the young people speak out so well at their time of loss. Though they are far from infancy, it appears that “….a little child shall
lead them.”
I support this 100%
I am glad that we as a Community and as individuals are taking a stand against gun violence. Our country certainly need to do something to stop all killings.
Thanks for our stand on the issue of gun violence. I was waiting for this.
