Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have been seeking ways and means of making our presence in Kallanode in Kerala a meaningful and relevant. A new initiative was launched on Feb. 10, 2018, as a camp was conducted for the senior citizens (65 and above) of Kallanode Parish by SCN community under the leadership of Sister Sheela Palamoottil SCN, in collaboration with the Parish of Kallanode.
Around 50 people participated in the camp. Sister Sheela introduced the resource persons, Mr. Varghese Paul and Mrs. Darlin Joseph from ‘Tharavaadu’(Senior citizen’s daycare center) Kozhikode. Mr. Varghese spoke about the importance of gathering together for mental, spiritual and physical well-being of the older people. He spent time in putting forth the realities of the senior citizens in the present scenario especially in Kerala where the numbers of seniors are steadily on the rise and the young are in foreign lands seeking jobs. He made them aware of the policies which are created for their benefits.
They must engage in things they would love to do. Mrs. Darlin P Jose spoke about their Senior citizens’ clubs which have been formed within the municipality and Day Care Center in Calicut. The participants were very enthused and expressed their need to come together often. Sister Bridget Kappalumakal’s presence was much appreciated by all since she was a pioneer in this mission and it was one of her dreams to have a ministry for the seniors. Medical tests for blood pressure and sugar were conducted during the camp. Nurses and the Jesus youth members assisted the sisters during the camp.
