Sister Deena Vazhaparampil from Sangsay shares an update on the agitations in the region of Darjeeling under which ministries of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Sangsay and Tendrabong fall.
She says, “I am sure all of you are praying for us and will want to know what is happening in the hills. The indefinite strike and agitation are going on for 26 days now. To add to that we are having incessant, heavy rains. People are in a pathetic situation with absolutely nothing to eat. On the July 20, there will be an all-party meeting of the political leaders which we hope will lead to a solution and the end to the agitation.”
Spearheading the strike is the Gorkha People’s Liberation Front that wants a separate Gorkha state for the hill people. Food supply lines have been blocked, causing great difficulties. Barring medicine shops, all other shops, schools, and colleges are shut down.
