Sisters at the Nazareth Convent in Chandapura celebrated the Tamil festival of Pongal recently. A thanksgiving ceremony took place in which farmers gave their thanks to the spirits of nature, the sun, and livestock for their assistance in providing a successful harvest. This day is also celebrated as Makar Sankranti in the northern parts of India. This is a day when the rest of the people of Tamilnadu celebrate the festival to pay their thanks to the farmers for the production of food and to encourage social cohesiveness and unite people. The celebration began in the morning with a team of Sisters engaged with the preparation of food and another team with the decorations unique to Pongal. A meaningful prayer service followed by a fellowship meal with all the Sisters, young members of formation, and employees marked the distinctive flavor of Pongal.

Sisters in St. Vincent’s School, Trichy celebrated the event with much enthusiasm as they prepared the Pongal meal along with staff which was then shared with the students.
