I am participating in the Biblical Study Tour sponsored by the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. We began in Greece and then went Turkey to visit the places where St. Paul established Christian Communities. Laurie Brink, OP was the faculty member for the Greece/Turkey segment. Visits to the sites were guided by writings from the Acts of the Apostles and the writings of Paul. The excavated sites provided insights to the life and culture in which Paul was taking the message of Jesus. Our Greek and Turkish guides provided us with the history and culture of the places as well as history down to the present time.
We celebrated liturgy outside by the stream in Philippi that commemorates where Lydia and her household were baptized. Another outside liturgy was at Corinth.
In Turkey in addition to visiting places where Paul went (Ephesus and Miletus) we visited several of the Churches mentioned in Revelations (Laodicia, Smryna and Sardis).
The Israel portion focuses on the places where Jesus lived and ministered. In addition to visiting the sites, we have classes conducted by Leslie Hoppe, OFM to study the Bible in context.
