Camille Panich, SCN, was honored April 20 as a Distinguished Alumni Circle Award Recipient of LaRoche College. She is pictured receiving her award along with the President of the College, Sister Candace Introcaso, CDP, Ph.D.
Sister Camille ’73, Ed.D., M.Ed., has held a long and varied teaching career at Vincentian Academy, serving as the international baccalaureate coordinator, AP calculus teacher and principal of the academy for 23 years.
“My greatest professional accomplishment has been encouraging and enabling my faculty members to be successful, positive influences on our students,” she said. “Hopefully that is how my legacy continues.”
She added, “In retrospect, I believe that the fact that I always taught at least one class led me to keep myself grounded in the realities of the classroom and to help the students know me outside of the administrator role.”
Early in her career Sister Camille taught in elementary schools before moving to high school mathematics, chemistry and physics. She also served as vice principal, co-principal and then principal.
A board member of the Divine Providence Alpha School, Sister Camille previously served on the board of the Vincentian Collaborative System for six years. She also was on the Integration Committee for the merging of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity into the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
“My love for my religious community led me to the work on the Integration Committee and the board of Vincentian Collaborative System. My lifelong commitment to Catholic education led me to continue working in the education area through the Alpha board after I retired from teaching,” she explained.
At La Roche College Sister Camille earned her bachelor’s degree in natural science. Later she obtained a Master of Secondary School Science in mathematics and chemistry from Duquesne University and her M.Ed. in educational administration from Boston College. Her dissertation topic was “A Study of the University Performance of Students with International Baccalaureate High School Experience.” There was no empirical data to support the successful claims of the program before her work.
“The excellent courses in mathematics gave me a strong basis for my many years of teaching of mathematics,” she said of La Roche. “I also believe that the well-rounded program instilled in me a love of learning which has served me well in my long career in education.”
