When SCN Associate Cathy Lavender went on her first volunteer trip to Belize, her students at Seton Catholic School in Lexington, KY collected money to send with her. With those funds, they bought a washer for the woman for whom they built a house, and donated the remainder of the money to help pay for a shower for another woman.
In 2010, Cathy returned to Belize and spent some time teaching students at St. Michael’s School in Las Flores, Belize. That year, the 6th and 7th Grades at Seton Catholic School sent school supplies and made rosaries for the students their age at the school. They also wrote letters to the students for the remainder of the school year. The students became prayer pals and pen pals.
This year, the two 7th grade classes have had three fund raisers to help their friends at St. Michael’s in Las Flores. They had a book drive, selling the books at Half Price books to donate the money, the two classes are having a penny drive to see which class can collect the most money, and they had a car wash, with proceeds going to St. Michael’s School.
Each year, Cathy brings the 7th grade students to Nazareth on a field trip that’s called “A Day of Prayer, Learning and Play to the Kentucky Holy Land.” On this day, they visit Nazareth, St. Thomas and Gethsemani.
This effort is a wonderful example of students reaching out in service to help others. Thanks for inspiring us, Cathy and students of Seton Catholic School!
