Easter is a time for hope and new life. This is just what 10 SCN Lay Mission Volunteers from Michigan and Kentucky gave to a family in the Appalachia region. These volunteers ventured with Sister Luke Boiarski to Beattyville, Kentucky, where they worked in collaboration with Dora Ross of Kentucky Cornerstone Ministries.
Ms. Dora selected a family who had been recently evicted from their home and was given a house to live in that was in deplorable condition. The father, Thomas, has been unemployed since the local saw mill closed last year. Trisha, the mother recently had major surgery. They are the parents of three children ages 12, nine and six.
This past week, the volunteers assisted this family by replacing a kitchen floor, painting ceilings, and fixing light fixtures, as well as building bunk beds for the children so they would not have to sleep on the floor. The family was ever so grateful for the volunteer’s help.
During our reflection time together, we were reminded of the quote from St. Theresa of Avila, “Christ has no body now, but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world.”
