Hurricane Matthew was a very powerful, long-lived and deadly tropical cyclone which became the first Category 5 Atlantic hurricane since Hurricane Felix in 2007. Next week Sisters will visit Lumberton, North Carolina, to assess the needs of a SCN Disaster Relief response. On top of being one of the poorest cities in the United States, Lumberton was one of the worst hit areas in North Carolina. Lumberton is home to the Lumbee Tribe who are descendants of the Cheraw and related Siouan-speaking Native Americans. At least 5,000 people have been displaced and are now dependent upon outside support.

The SCN Disaster Relief team is beginning to learn more about how they can be of service to the people of this devastated community and organizing a trip tentatively scheduled for the week of November 13. If you would like to make a donation for disaster relief efforts, please visit

Please keep all those affected by Hurricane Matthew in our prayers as they work to restore their lives and homes.
