Nazareth has long been a destination of the masses, in biblically and in more recent history right here in the Bardstown area. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth is opening a new visitor center on its Nazareth campus to welcome people and let them know about the organization’s current ministries, said Rita Davis, SCN, director of the visitor center at Nazareth.
A grand opening for the room, on the first floor of O’Connell Hall is 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Oct. 26. A 10-minute film, highlighting current ministries and door prizes will be given each hour on the hour.
The center features large photos depicting some of the places SCN sisters work as well as sculptures, paintings and other artifacts from those countries. Volunteers will be on hand to greet guests and answer questions.
Featured items such as “Caring Candy,” made by Margaret Regina Murphy and volunteers, will be for sale. The proceeds will help alleviate poverty. Two books, Pioneer Spirit, by Mary Ellen Doyle, SCN and Fifty Monsoons, by Patricia Kelley, SCN, will also be available.
After stopping in to see the new visitor center, guests will also have an opportunity to visit Heritage Hall for a look into the sister’s history, the new Spiritual Ministries Office as well as view a special exhibit in the archives, celebrating the sisters and national archive month as well as take a special tour of the “vault” which contains the “Lincoln Note” – a handwritten message President Abraham Lincoln wrote promising SCNs property during the Civil War.
“We’re very excited. We’ve never had a visitor center,” said Diane Curtis, director of communications for SCN.
“It puts a face to all aspects of the SCN family,” she said.
“This is really just the beginning…We’re trying to remind people that we are many parts,” Davis said.
The visitor center’s regular hours will be 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.
