The plight of Mary Rollin, Mother Catherine’s Godchild

Articles of agreement made and agreed on this 22 day of May in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight between Mother Catharine Spalding of Nazareth Monastery in the county of Nelson State of Kentucky of the one part And Elizabeth Wescott of the County afor- of the other Part Witnesseth that Wheras the said Elizabeth Wescott being desirous of retiring from the noise and bustle of the world and to devote the remainder of her life to the service of God in the Monastery afor- And whereas the said Elizabeth hath by certain instruments in writing bearing even date with these Presents conveyed to the Right Reverend Benedict Joseph Flaget of Bardstown a certain tract of Land and some Negroes for the benefit of the Monastery afor-. The said Catherine Spalding hereby undertakes and agrees to furnish the said Elizabeth Wescott with a separate Room in said Monastery & to cause her to be boarded and taken care of as a member of the family during her life or so long as she shall choose to remain in said Monastery furnishing her with clothing as other members of the family The said Catharine Spalding also agrees to support and bring up Elizabeth Brosius (niece of the said Elizabeth Wescott) until she shall complete the sixteenth year of her age to admit her among the boarders in the said Monastery & to give her a good education The said Catherine Spalding also agrees to pay three hundred Dollars to Jane McCoy of Baltimore State of Maryland niece to the dec’d Husband of the said Elizabeth Wescott And also to pay two hundred Dollars for the education of John Brosius in the College of St. Thomas
