“My Two Loves–Art and People”
CMM Contact: Sharen Baldy, SCN
I grew up as Shirley Boiarski, the second of three daughters born to Alphonse and Anna Bologna Boiarski in Bellaire, Ohio. I attended St. John Central Grade and High School. I was always proud of my Italian and Polish heritage, in part because as a child I lived in an intergenerational home where there were intermittently grandparents, uncles and cousins. Even as a young child I loved being creative and artistic. I remember being the first one in my art class to draw a neck connecting the head to the body. I was so very proud of that achievement that I still have that drawing today. I was taught by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and Sister Mary Angelita Coomes had a great influence on me during my teen years. Her influence led me to begin thinking about becoming a Sister of Charity.
Fortunately, I have been encouraged to use my talents to the utmost. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Spalding University and a Master’s degree in the same field from the University of Louisville. I taught Art at Presentation Academy in Louisville from 1972-1981. I also have a Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, Chicago, and served as a Pastoral Associate at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Louisville from 1982-1990, and at St. Joseph Parish, Tiltonsville, Ohio from 1990-1997.
I have loved all my ministries; however vocation ministry has a very special place in my heart because I have come into contact with so many faith-filled women. I have had the opportunity to accompany and mentor women who are open to sharing their deepest longings, passions, challenges, strengths and vulnerabilities. In the process I have been able to visit different localities where our Sisters are in ministry. One of the highlights of my endeavors was my trip to India where I spent time with the young women in formation. I was moved by their love for the Community and for mission.
I am energized by people since I had the privilege of growing up in an extended family. As an artist I love painting and woodcarving. I love working with acrylics doing impressionistic as well as realistic painting. I also enjoy printmaking with woodcuts, etchings and mono prints from plexiglass.
Bicycling is one of my hobbies. I am a caregiver to my mother and belong to a caregivers’ support group. I am also on the Committee of the Mayor of Bellaire, “Citizens for a Better Bellaire.” Our mission is to help maintain a clean and safe environment in and around my hometown, Bellaire. I am also an integral part of St. Joseph Parish here in Tiltonsville.
