In Surkhet, Nepal

International Women’s day was celebrated in Surkhet on March 8 with a day-long program from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It was organized by the District Women Development Committee along with various NGOs working for women, political parties as well as government offices. Women processed from Mangalgadi Chowk to Kabadi hall with the main slogan,” women basis of respect: skillful hands and self-employment”. Since the rally started earlier than usual many women from the remote villages could not reach on time but they attended the program which was presided by the chief officer of Women development committee. Inspirit of the prohibition on public gatherings and rally due to the incoming local election, high-ranking officials like acting chief district officer, local development officer, superintendent of police, women leaders of various local political parties, NGOs; government offices were present as guests.

The program started with speech contest on “women’s role for local development”. 24 women from 24 wards of Birendranagar Municipality spoke on the topic. Four of them received prizes. Speeches by invited guests, songs and dances were part of the program. Women from the villages were present in huge number encouraging the participants by clapping hands. The day was an eye opener for the simple village women that the world is changing and it is high time for them to take lead for local development by overcoming all the traditional practices and superstitions which has restricted their freedom. Navjyoti Center also celebrated women’s day for its members on March 4th with various games and prizes for the winners.

In Gumla, India

85 young women of Nazareth Girls Hostel, Tukutoli, Gumla, pursuing their college studies in the nearby Kartick Oraon College as well as few other Intermediate colleges in Gumla town including the Deepanjali students gathered at Nazareth Convent yard at 5 p.m on March 8 for the 106th World Women’s Day celebration which started with slogans.

The program consisted of competitions in Speech, Self-composed poem, Painting and Writing Slogans. All were encouraged to take part at least in one of the program.

Sister Marianne who was responsible for organizing this event introduced the theme of the World Women’s Day: BE BOLD FOR CHANGE. She led the girls to refresh their memories on the Valiant daring women who have created History by bringing about positive change in the society. Many of the girls spoke with enthusiasm and

Many of the girls spoke with enthusiasm and self-confidence. It was very informative as well as created awareness about who they are, who they can be, and what is the ground reality and what can bring about change. The hostel girls were inspired and ignited to soar high.

Participants being many it was felt opportunity should be given for all to perform. Hence it was decided that the competitions on this occasion will continue every evening after they return from their classes for the next three days and then the winners will be given prices.
