International Women’s Day Celebrated in Sangsay, India

In Sangsay, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth run Nazareth Health Centre, a Social Work Centre, and St. Dominic School.

March 8, 2014 was a memorable day for the women of Kandong, Balucop, Raigave, and Dejea villages because they celebrated International Women’s Day for the first time ever. The innocence of the ladies really touched my heart. They were not aware of International Women’s Day before this.

About 109 women and nearly 20 children gathered to celebrate the day. Mrs. Manuka Rai, the president of World Vision was the chief guest and many other officials were also present on the occasion. The theme of the day was “Atrocity Towards Women” and “Save the Girl Child.”

It was an auspicious day for us to honor and award a girl who received all immunization without fail. The first ever twins born in the locality was acknowledged and honoured during the celebration. Many cultural programs and games were organized for mothers and winners were awarded prizes. At the end of the celebration, we had a fellowship meal together. Inspired by the programs, the women took a pledge that they would continue to organize Women’s Day in the coming years too.
