2018 International Women’s Day was celebrated by the women of Mahila Mukti Sangharsh Samiti and Self Help Group members of Chatra District. It was a historic event considering the present dangerous situation facing the country. Previous to Women’s Day, around 250 women leaders and some youth gathered for a two-day convention of Mahila Mukti Sangharsh Samiti and election of office bearers. The chief guest for the convention was Sister Julia OSU-Ranchi; the supporters were Sister Manju Kulapuram SCSC- FORUM National secretary and Mr.Jitender Kumar Singh-Chief editor of a local daily. A large part of the two days spent in understanding the constitution of Mahila Mukti Sangharsh Samiti and the burning issues of the present day, especially looting of resources by the corporates and the politics of power. It was encouraging and heartening to witness the analytical skills of illiterate women as they explored various socio-political issues affecting their community/life during the group discussion. They are convinced that the present system is not for the development of the poor. At the end of each day, the children of Chetna Bharati Gurukul and the youth groups depicted the present scenario in songs, dances, and skits.

On March 8 about 3,000 women and a few men from 60 villages (seven blocks) of Chatra District took out a rally with slogans and placards giving the messages/challenges such as “We want development, not destruction, Nothing is complete without women’s organized power, Save Bharat (villages) not India, and Our environment is limited, save it.” It was a historic event for the people of Chatra especially in the light of the present dangerous situation facing the country. The women tried to tell that they demand justice not pittance and they expect accountability of all the misdeeds/oppressive governance of the rulers.

There was a common feeling/conviction that our world has more good and committed people than persons/systems who are trying to destroy life on earth.
