“I am, because you are” is an African proverb. It expresses the idea that personhood involves being part of a web of relationships. We are all dependent on each other. Navjyoti Center in Kathmandu, Nepal, truly embodies this African proverb in their daily lives. When the first time the children come to the center, they seem to be lost, frightened, shy, hesitant, non-communicative, or unfriendly. Within a short period of contact with the other children, with the continuous vigilant care by the dedicated and committed teachers and Sisters and under the supervision and guidance of Lisa Perekkatt, SCN, the newcomers bloom where they are gifted. Navjyoti family can truly be proud to say, “I am, because you are.” This is the Lenten theme of Misereor Germany, who has been a regular benefactor of Navjyoti Center.

In the afternoon, the children presented a small cultural program for the visitors. Abhishek Bajracharya, an eleven-year-old boy stole the heart of Carolin in teaching her how to play with his learning materials in the cognitive class.
The visitors brought sweets and play materials for the children and the Misereor Lenten Veil 2017/2018: ‘I am, because you are’. They were touched by the performance of the children and were very much impressed to listen to the stories of improvements made by many of the children being at Navjyoti Centre over the years.
