October offers multiple opportunities to join in solidarity with people around the world to forward human rights and the work of the United Nations.
- On October 11, the international community celebrates the first annual International Day of the Girl. The UN General Assembly, in its resolution proclaiming the day, recognized that empowerment of and investment in girls are critical for economic growth and the eradication of poverty, and are key to breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence against women. It is hoped that the observance of the day will raise awareness of the situation of girls around the world and promote their human rights.
