Ashirvad North and South community halls were decked with shining lights of varied colors and flowers to celebrate the golden jubilee of Karuna Thottumarickal, SCN, in Mokama on July 14, 2018.
Ashirvad North, her local community, invited the campus SCNs and the parish community for the liturgy and the festive supper. Sister Karuna’s nephew, Rev. George P. M., a Kathmandu Jesuit, concelebrated the Eucharist with two priests. Before the Mass, Ann George Mukalel, SCN, gave a brief summary of Sister Karuna’s life from home through formation, until now.
As we listen to Sister Ann George anyone could feel that Sister Karuna is a compassionate person. Karuna is a Hindi name and its literal translation could be any of these: Compassion, mercy, charity and tenderness. Sister Karuna is an embodiment of all these words of goodness put together in her word and deed in caring for the sick, co-workers and with her Sisters in community.
In his homily, Father George referred to the Holy Scriptures the meaning of jubilee year: Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan. Lev. 25: 10. He further said that Sister Karuna has been celebrating her jubilee throughout her life by having taken time to recognize and acknowledge any person in need who came along her way with a kind word. In giving them dignity she went out of her way to relieve their pain and suffering.
Sister Karuna, we thank you for being an example of growing in age gracefully. As you continue to celebrate your golden years of faithfulness and service in SCN community, may the poor and the suffering see the compassionate face of God through you and live a life of dignity with hope.
Malini Manjoly, SCN
