The Sisters of Nazareth Academy, Gaya, celebrated International Women’s Day with the women prisoners of the Central Jail, Gaya, on March 13, 2018.  Since the Jail had arranged a program for the women inmates with another group on March 8, we postponed our celebration for this day.

We six sisters, two candidates and our tailoring teacher, Mrs. Babita planned and participated in the celebration. We conducted some games for them. All the women were encouraged to participate in one game or other. They were divided into four different age groups. At the end of the games, Sophia Joseph, SCN, Principal, Nazareth Academy, Gaya, gave a short speech and highlighted the importance and value of being a woman and she appreciated their participation in the games. The winners were given prizes. The first prize was distributed by the Jail Medical Officer, second by Sister Sophia and the third by Anne Marie Thayilchirayil, SCN. At the end, 56 women were presented with colorful skirt material and a packet of biscuits each. Mrs. Amrita, one of the prisoners thanked all the Sisters for their presence and generous contribution.

All present including the women police guards were happy with the celebration. We also had the opportunity of meeting the Central Jail Superintendent and the Jailer. The Jail officials were very appreciative of our service especially the sewing class. They asked us to continue our collaborative work with them. Dolsie D’Mello and I who visit the jail twice a week after school hours hope to have this type of program for them in the coming years.
