Flaget Memorial Hospital officials honored the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for their work in the community during a celebration Thursday afternoon in the hospital’s serenity garden.

Representatives from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth applaud after Flaget Memorial Hospital President Sue Downs informs them that Flaget plans to name a new building on the campus in honor of the Sisters.

Flaget President Sue Downs presented the Sisters with a commemorative plaque and a $5,000 donation towards the Sisters’ scholarship program.

Downs added that Flaget Memorial Hospital plans to pay tribute to the Sisters by naming an upcoming addition to its campus the “Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Building.”

“It’s a way to honor them,” Downs said, noting that the Sisters helped launch Flaget Memorial Hospital in the 1950s.

“They do so much for the community,” she added. “They’re the ones that made our culture and gave us values.”

Coming into the celebration, Sisters of Charity of Nazareth President Sister Mary Elizabeth Miller said she didn’t expect such a generous donation or Flaget Memorial Hospital naming one of its buildings in their honor.

“It’s almost overwhelming,” she said. “We’re very much honored and we’re very much proud of Flaget and the work they do.”
