In the sultry heat of July, Camp Maria Retreat Center hosted 60 veterans and their families as a part of the Southern Maryland Vacation for Vets program. The group enjoyed cabin living, swimming, boating and fishing off the dock. The participants also enjoyed a myriad of other activities including pony rides, dog search and rescue demonstration, a horse show and a petting zoo.
Southern Maryland Vacations for Vets is a program created to give our wounded or sick service members, from local military hospitals and treatment centers, a chance to relax with their family in a quiet country setting. It is a chance for them to escape the hospital routine and/or forget about their traumatic experiences. The weekend retreat is completely free of charge for the Vets and their families.
Many thanks to the SCNs at St. Louise Convent in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the generous Memorial Day donation to Camp Maria Retreat Center to help offset costs for this wonderful program at Camp Maria.
Comments from some participants include:
“We truly enjoyed the hospitality shown to us last weekend. It meant so much to us to just have time to spend together and to get our minds off of medical concerns. Once again THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH TO YOU AND YOUR VOLUNTEERS!”
“I truly enjoyed myself despite the heat. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. The activities were very engaging and appreciated. I do hope a get a chance to visit your wonderful establishment again. Thank you for all you do and provide for Wounded Warriors.”
Camp Maria Retreat Center began working in partnership with Southern Maryland Vacation for Vets last December when the group joined together at Camp Maria for their Christmas program. We look forward our continuing relationship with Southern Maryland Vacation for Vets in support of this important program.
