Ellen Paul, SCN (center) shares a meal with friends
at the Haitian Elder Program.

In 2011, Sister Ellen Paul McGovern secured funds to assist the Haitian Elder Social Service Program. The program is part of Catholic Charities of Greater Boston.

With assistance from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, the group was able to purchase Rosetta Stone Level 1 and a few dictionaries. These items will assist the Haitians in learning the English language.

In addition, the Haitian Multi Service Center was outfitted with a new television, DVD player and radio/CD player. These items are essential for the elders to continue to learn English as well as to enjoy entertainment together in their own language.

With the remaining funds, the group was able to have lunch by the Jamaica Pond. The trip was greatly appreciated by all. Planning for their next group trip is underway.

Director Guy Apollon says “the difference made in the life of the Haitian elders is truly immeasurable. We were able to buy a sound system that will serve to both teach and entertain. We were able to get the elders out of the classroom which they have desired for a very long time. Attendance was never better.”
