Today let us offer prayers of Thanksgiving as we celebrate the ten-year anniversary of ministry in Botswana. Let us recall how our Sisters from the Eastern Province arrived in Botswana on September 7, 2000 and our Sisters from the Western Province arrived the following day, September 8, 2000. Over the years our Sisters have been involved in immensely needed and life-giving ministries in Jwaneng, Lobatse, Kanye, Nthantlhe, and Metsimotlhabe.
Botswana is believed to have one of the highest known rates of the HIV/AIDS infection in the world. SCN ministries include health care, education, pastoral and social services for those infected and affected by AIDS; daycare services for children in need, including those orphaned by AIDS; and youth ministry. And just this year, as part of a collaborative ministry, SCNs helped open a groundbreaking facility, a much-needed hospice.
Later this month, Mary Elizabeth Miller, SCN, will travel to Botswana along with Angela Hicks, SCN, one of the pioneers, to help celebrate this milestone and in the coming weeks, we will share photo galleries and articles as we recall the pioneering efforts of SCNs in Africa.
