Today is Sept. 1. For the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, this is a big day-Belize Foundation Day! When Mike Oliver, SJ, realized he needed the help of more sisters, Jim Short, SJ contacted the SCN Superior General, Barbara Thomas. As a result, 45 years ago, in 1975, Sr. Mary Lynn Fields, SCN began ministry at Sacred Heart Parish in Dangriga.
Over the years, Sisters of Charity came from the United States and India to serve in health care, education, lay ministry formation, social work, and service to the church. There have been missions in Punta Gorda and San Antonio in the Toledo district; San Ignacio, Belmopan, and Las Flores in the Cayo district; Belize City in the Belize district, and Independence in the Stann Creek district.
Today, Higinia Bol, SCN, continues the mission at St. Peter Claver parish in Punta Gorda, and Beverly Hoffman, SCN, serves at The Inspiration Center in Belize City. Carlette Gentle, SCN, founded and continues LIFE (Living Independently in Full Existence), serving the elderly in the south side of Belize City. Our Belizean SCNs, Amina Bejos, and Barbara Flores, minister now in the United States.
We are grateful that many inspiring SCN Lay Associates continue to spread the charism of Charity today, in Stann Creek, Cayo, and Belize districts. We are happy to celebrate this milestone of 45 years with the people of Belize! We thank God for this day!
Recalling with love our pioneers and others in Belize. Mary Lynn, my class, we sent you as our representative and fields martyrs death. So young! We are blessed!
I was a volunteer with the Sisters in San Antonio Village, Toledo District, Belize in the Fall Semester of 1984. I was also able to spend a week with the Sisters in Dangriga before returning to Texas. Since then, I completed my graduate studies and served in various educational and administrative roles, eventually focusing on Pastoral Care. I often remember my experiences in Belize, and hope to take a journey back there after these many years, to see that lovely place of inspiration once again.
Congratulations to 45 years of SCN life and ministry in Belize. Mary Lynn is a martyr for Belize. May God be with those loving and for those who have to heaven in and from Belize.
Congratulations, Sisters and all who have labored in missions in Belize! We are so proud of your outstanding efforts and achievements! My husband and I visited Sr. Maggie Cooper and the community there many years ago during our Easter break. We so appreciated the hospitality of the Sisters and “Maggie’s Travel Service” who showed us around Belize City, and countryside into Mayan country! Such good memories and always special interest in our missions there. God bless and in-Spirit all!
