1 Sm. 1:24-28; 1 Sm. 2:1, 4-8; Lk. 1:46-56

“I asked Yahweh for this boy and God granted me my request. Now I give him to Yahweh, for his entire life is given to God.” Sm. 1:27-28

Hannah, and later Mary, made the ultimate sacrifice as parents. They freely and joyfully dedicated their firstborn to God. They did not hold back. They did not begrudge the sacrifice. They gave and sang a song of praise at the same time.

“What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part.
But what can I give Him? I’ll give Him my heart.”
—Christina G. Rossetti

Emmanuel, in this season of Advent, help me to remember that thanks and giving go hand in hand. AMEN

How is my attitude toward giving? What is God asking me to entrust to God’s care? Am I singing a song of praise as I give?

Today’s Advent reflection is by Betsy Kammerdiener, SCNA, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
