“I am content if I can only be useful” – Catherine Spalding
2017 Jubilarians were honored today during a Celebration Liturgy at St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, KY. The Mass included a renewal of vows for the 21 SCNs honored for 55-75 years.
Vice-Provincial Sharon Gray, SCN, welcomed those gathered, “Our Constitutions tell us that our vows of poverty, chastity and obedience are initiated in Baptism, that this gospel life in a community of love and trust is a continuous effort toward freedom within ourselves to be for others. And indeed, you Sister Jubilarians have been for others throughout your years of life and service as Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. … The Jubilarians represent a total of 1,330 years of dedicated service as Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. …Impelled by the love of Christ, you have been useful, you have been generous, you have been caring and continue even today. Per your request, donations totaling $584.10 have been collected for the persons in need who come to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.”
Barbara Joseph Lammers, SCN, offered a reflection, “Did all teach primary age children or music; did all teach chemistry or English? Did all walk the picket line or serve as an administrator? Did all work in a hospital or confront politicians? No, and that is a good thing. Was there any one thing that all did? I would say, ‘yes’. All tried to live her life to love, in the spirit of Christ. … For most of us, our initial ministries changed and we changed with them but love went ahead of us as we saw new ways of sharing love with others. The one things we all desired was to faithfully follow the Gospel command to love one another.”
Mass was followed by a celebratory dinner in the Motherhouse dining room for the honored Jubilarians. For more photos and video, click here.
